Who were The Beatles?
The Beatles were an English rock band created in Liverpool in 1960. The band consisted of four men named John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr.
The Beatles' rise to fame
During the early 1960s, their popularity sky-rocketed, which was known as "Beatlemania". After their first hit single, "Love me do", they acquired the nickname "the Fab Four" as Beatlemania was in full effect in Britain over the following year. Then, in early 1964, they became international stars, firmly starting, and leading, the British Invasion. From then on, the Beatles produced what many consider their finest material in the bands sole history.

After the break-up in 1970, they each went to different path ways of successful music careers of varying lengths, but in the December of 1980, John Lennon was shot and killed. Then in the November of 2001, George Harrison died of lung cancer. Although many of the stars have gone, they have left a legacy. According to the RIAA, the Beatles are the best-selling music artists in the United States, selling 178 million certified units. They have also received ten Grammy Awards, and an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. They are the best-selling band in history, with an estimate of sales of over 600 million records worldwide. Finally, the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. They have become widely known as one of the most influential acts of the rock era.
